I’ve been debating with myself for many years about two items to include in your survival equipment – These items are not necessary for survival, but arc of 3 distinct, great advantage for post-survival knowledge – If you do survive, how do you know where you are? Where has the shell of the Earth’s crazy rotation taken you? Or shall we say deposited you? And if you lay claim to any land, how do you record it? That means how do you record it accurately?
First of all, take a course in navigation. Purchase for yourself the book, Nathaniel Bowditch’s Table* Also, buy yourself the best Sextant you can find. Take care of it as if it were your life’s treasure. Learn how to use it – become an expert. It can tell you your location Learn your constellations of the stars – they will not change; only their location will. Take a sun dial with you. If you can, take a globe with you, and 1/16” or 1/8″ wide colored tape. You will be able to tape your new equator. For tools, take long and short levels.
Take a good stopwatch with you. Your days may be longer or shorter than 24 hours.
Take a course in surveying, and become an expert or have someone with you take this responsibility Purchase the best transit, tripod, surveyor’s rod. and surveyor’s steel tape. If you want to record any property you may want to claim, you’ll need them. Now if you can’t do it all, at least do Paragraphs 2 & 3. Good lock.
